On October 28, 2019, Tan Lihai, the special-term professor of Shenzhen University, was invited by the Center to give an academic lecture. The lecture was entitled “Positioning of Language Center in Human Brain: Protection and Remodeling”. This lecture is the second lecture of the "Language, Cognition and Brain Science Lecture Series" of the Center. Professor Wang Jianqin, the director of the center, presided over the lecture. To meet the requirements of scholars outside Beijing, this lecture was also broadcast live on the Internet. More than 100 teachers and students both inside and outside the school listened to it on the spot or online.
The report first introduced the four major directions of cognitive research in the brain: cognitive function research of the brain, research on language ability of children and adolescents, brain disease research and brain-like intelligence research. Then, Professor Tan reported on the theme of “plasticity of human brain”. The key conclusion is that the human brain has high plasticity throughout the life cycle, thus providing a physiological basis for intelligence development and rehabilitation of brain function. Finally, Professor Tan elaborated on the topic of “language specificity”. The main conclusion is that the language center of human brain has language specificity. The development, protection and rehabilitation of language ability must take into account the characteristics of language.
After the lecture, the teachers and students raised questions on the content of the lecture, and Professor Tan answered patiently. The contents of the lecture included experimental research, theoretical explanation and application value. The academic frontier was combined with clinical application. The content was rich and profound, and the teachers and students benefited a lot.
