Introduction to the CCSL

The Innovation Introduction and Intelligence AttractionCCSLfor Language Cognitive Science, Key Laboratory of Language Cognitive Science under the Ministry of Education, and Language Cognitive Science Research Institute at Beijing Language and Culture University is an internationally open scientific research institution with language cognitive science as its discipline construction goal and second language acquisition and cognition, language cognitive neuroscience, and language cognition and neuromorphic research as its main research directions supported by the "Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Recruitment Program" by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education.


Background of the Workshop

General Secretary Xi Jinping has high expectations for foreign students to tell good Chinese stories, and he has repeatedly emphasized the importance and urgency of Chinese language education, pointing out that language and writing are carriers, bridges, bonds, and keys. However, many learners encounter various problems in the learning process, such as difficulty in improving language proficiency and frequent grammatical errors. Therefore, exploring the mechanism and regularity of second language acquisition, deepening the understanding of the cognitive and neural basis of language, and conducting educational teaching practices are of great significance to promote language learning and cultural exchanges between Chinese and foreign students.

The purpose of the workshop "Language Acquisition, Cognition, and Brain Science" is to provide students with a comprehensive and in-depth academic perspective, characterized by integrating linguistic theory, psycholinguistics, and cognitive neuroscience theory, to help students understand the essence of second language acquisition, master the basic knowledge and research methods of language cognitive science, and accumulate important experiences in teaching practice. In addition, the workshop also focuses on cultivating students' innovative thinking and practical ability, guiding them to explore new research fields and teaching modesCCSLd on the theoretical models and practical methods of language cognitive science, and contributing to the development and innovation of second language education and the service of national science and technology development strategies and Chinese language dissemination strategies.


Topic of this Session

This session mainly focuses on the differences between implicit and explicit knowledge, learning and teaching, and their respective impacts on the development of second language acquisition after critical period (childhood). The specific contents include several key theories or models of second language development, such as Chomsky's theory, skill acquisition theory, and social-cultural theory, as well as evidence from cutting-edge research in psycholinguistics and neuroscience, such as VanPatten's input processing model and Ullman's declarative/procedural model. This session also deeply analyzes the correlation between these research results and classroom-CCSLd second language development.


Instructors

Professor James Lantolf, who is a distinguished professor at the Innovation Talent IntroductionCCSLof Language Cognitive Science at Beijing Language University and a retired professor of Pennsylvania State University in the United States, will be the main lecturer. Professor Lantolf is one of the main leaders in the development of social-cultural theory today, with his primary research areas being Social Cultural Theory (SCT), Second Language Acquisition, and Classroom-CCSLSecond Language Development. He proposed Concept-CCSL Teaching (CBT) and pioneered Dynamic Assessment (DA). He was awarded the "Outstanding Scholar and Service Award" by the North American Applied Linguistics Association, and was listed as one of the most influential applied linguists in the past 35 years, according to KeesdeBot's "History of Applied Linguistics (After 1980)". In 2022, he was named one of the top 2% of language researchers by Stanford University.


Target Audience

Faculty and students from universities and research institutes at home and abroad are welcome to apply for this session, and the session plans to enroll 50 students.
