National Outstanding College Students Summer Camp Enrollment Brochure
To enhance the understanding of outstanding college students across the country regarding the interdisciplinary field of "Language Cognitive Science," promote communication among exceptional students, and provide opportunities for interaction with experts in the field, Beijing Language University's Language Cognitive Science Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base will hold the 2023 National Outstanding College Students Summer Camp from July 7th to 8th, 2023. We are now open for applications from students nationwide, including our university.
I. Introduction to the Base
Beijing Language University's Language Cognitive Science Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base is an internationally oriented and open scientific research institution with the goal of language cognitive science as its disciplinary construction target. Supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, it serves as a platform for the "Disciplinary Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Program."
The base distinguishes itself through the construction of a world-class team of international scholars, comprising distinguished scholars from the top 100 universities and research institutions worldwide. Currently, the base has recruited more than ten international academic masters and backbone scholars, all of whom are renowned and well-known scholars from prestigious universities and research institutions worldwide, with high academic influence in the international academic community. The domestic team consists mainly of well-known scholars, professors, associate professors, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. These two teams jointly guide the graduate students majoring in language cognitive science, with the aim of cultivating high-end interdisciplinary talents with international academic vision, compatibility in arts and sciences, and teaching and research capabilities in language cognitive science.
The base focuses on disciplinary innovation and aims to construct a new interdisciplinary field, language cognitive science, through the cross-disciplinary integration of linguistics, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Language cognitive science is a secondary discipline under the primary discipline of Chinese language and literature. The base not only recruits master's students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows majoring in "Language Cognitive Science," but also recruits master's students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows majoring in "Linguistics and Applied Linguistics."
The Language Cognitive Science Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base has complete hardware and software conditions for conducting experimental research. The base's "Language Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory" includes eye-tracking lab, speech lab, electroencephalography (EEG) lab, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) lab. The lab has skilled professionals proficient in brain imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and fNIRS. The base aims to build an international and open language cognitive science laboratory, laying a solid research foundation for serving the national science and technology development strategy and Chinese language promotion strategy.
Recently, the "Language Cognitive Science Key Laboratory (Beijing Language University)" led by the Language Cognitive Science Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base has been approved for construction. The key laboratory will provide new and powerful guarantees for the base's innovative graduate talent training model and improve the quality of graduate student training.
II. Introduction to the Major
Language Cognitive Science is the first cognitive science sub-discipline established in China at Beijing Language University. It combines language acquisition, language cognition, and brain science to explore the behaviors and neural mechanisms of language acquisition and cognition among Chinese language learners using new technologies and methods from cognitive science research.
Language Cognitive Science is an important research field that emerges from the intersection of six supporting disciplines of cognitive science, including linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, philosophy, and anthropology. Its scientific goal is to explore the mechanisms and laws behind the generation, acquisition, and cognitive development of human language.
The base's language cognitive science major consists of three research directions: Chinese second language acquisition and cognition research, language cognitive neuroscience research, and language cognition and neuromorphic research.
As an interdisciplinary field, language cognitive science offers broader prospects for graduates in terms of further studies and employment compared to traditional disciplines. Graduates can engage in scientific research and further studies in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, and other teaching and research institutions related to cognitive science, both domestically and internationally. They can also work in Chinese international education institutions at universities, as well as in education consultancy, eye-tracking, electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and other high-end professional technical training related to language education and artificial intelligence in various enterprises and institutions.
III. Target Applicants
Based on the characteristics of the cutting-edge interdisciplinary field of "Language Cognitive Science," this summer camp mainly aims to recruit outstanding undergraduate students (including students from our university) with backgrounds in Chinese language and literature, foreign language and literature, psychology, computer science (including artificial intelligence and automation), and other related majors.
IV. Summer Camp Schedule
This event will be conducted online. If any campers wish to participate in offline activities on campus, please indicate so in the registration form. The summer camp schedule is as follows:
V. Application Requirements
1. Applicants must be outstanding graduates from universities nationwide in 2024 (including outstanding graduates from our university).
2. Applicants should meet the basic requirements for exempted admission to master's programs and are expected to obtain the recommendation for exempted admission from their respective universities.
3. Applicants must comply with laws and regulations, have good physical and mental health, and demonstrate excellent character and academic performance.
4. Applicants should have achieved satisfactory grades in all courses during the first to fifth semesters, ranking top in their major's academic performance and overall quality. The specific ranking will be confirmed by the Intelligence Introduction Base. Students who have outstanding performance in other areas may have relaxed ranking requirements.
VI. Application Materials
1. "Application Form for Beijing Language University's 2023 National Outstanding College Students Summer Camp" (Attachment 1, to be filled out and stamped by the applicant's undergraduate department for verification).
2. Copy of the applicant's identification card (scanned front and back on the same page).
3. Student ID card (information page and pages with registration stamps from each semester).
4. Undergraduate transcript and proof of major ranking (stamped by the university or academic affairs department of the department).
5. Proof of language proficiency (such as CET English level 4 or 6 score report, English major level 4 score report, or test scores from TOEFL, GRE, IELTS, etc.).
6. Additional materials (awards certificates, papers, research achievements, etc. If unavailable, this item may be omitted).
Applicants must carefully complete the above materials and ensure the accuracy and truthfulness of the information provided. Scan the original copies of items 1 to 6 and merge them into a single PDF file, naming the file "Full Name of the Applicant-School Name-Major Name-2023 Summer Camp Application Materials." The subject of the email should be "Name + 2023 National Outstanding College Students Summer Camp Application Materials." Original copies of the materials will be required for verification during the online registration.
VII. Application Process

2. Online application period: From now until July 1, 2023.
3. Eligibility review and announcement of the list: The Intelligence Introduction Base will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the applicants' materials and determine the list of participants for the summer camp. The list of participants will be published on the official website of the Graduate School of Beijing Language University.
VIII. Assessment and Recognition
During the summer camp, the Language Cognitive Science Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base of Beijing Language University will assess the participants through various methods. Based on the application materials and performance during the camp, outstanding participants will be recognized and their names will be published on the official website of the Graduate School of Beijing Language University.
IX. Support Policy for "Outstanding Participants"
1. If the "outstanding participants" meet the requirements for recommended admission to a graduate program in their intended universities in 2024 and apply for recommended admission to our university in the same major as the one publicly announced for "outstanding participants," they may be directly admitted as master's students in our university without the need for further admission interviews. The specific examination subjects should be consistent with the major and direction. In case of any adjustments to the major or direction names, the "2024 Master's Program Directory of Beijing Language University" or relevant notices shall prevail. Eligible candidates should register and fill in our university's voluntary choices in the National Recommended Admission System and complete the corresponding procedures, such as accepting the admission interview and receiving the admission notice, according to the actual process. Those who fail to complete the procedures within the prescribed time will be considered as voluntarily giving up their status as "outstanding participants" in our university.
2. "Outstanding participants" who do not qualify for recommended admission are welcome to continue applying for the majors offered by the base during the national entrance examination registration.

No fees will be charged.
XI. Special Notes
Each applicant is limited to one training unit and one major at our university. If you have already applied but are unable to participate in this summer camp due to special circumstances, please email us to explain the situation before July 3.
