To enhance the understanding of outstanding college students nationwide about the interdisciplinary field of "Language and Cognitive Science," promote communication among excellent college students, and provide opportunities for interaction with experts in the field, Beijing Language University's Language and Cognitive Science Discipline Innovative Talent Introduction Base will organize the 2023 National Excellent College Students Summer Camp from July 7th to 8th, 2023. We are now open to college student applicants from universities across the country (including our own university).
I. Introduction to the Base
Beijing Language University's Language and Cognitive Science Discipline Innovative Talent Introduction Base is an internationally-oriented and open scientific research institution with the goal of language cognitive science as its discipline construction target. It focuses on research areas such as second language acquisition and cognition, language cognitive neuroscience, and language cognition and neuromorphic research.
The base features a world-class international scholar team construction, comprising top scholars from universities and research institutions ranked among the top 100 globally. Currently, the base has introduced more than ten international academic masters and backbone scholars who are renowned and influential in the international academic community, representing prestigious universities and research institutions worldwide. The domestic scholar team mainly consists of well-known scholars, professors, associate professors, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers. These two teams jointly guide graduate students majoring in language cognitive science, with the aim of cultivating high-end, composite talents with an international academic vision, interdisciplinary compatibility, and teaching and research capabilities in language cognitive science.
The base aims for disciplinary innovation by promoting cross-disciplinary integration of linguistics, cognitive science, and neuroscience, establishing a new interdisciplinary field known as "Language and Cognitive Science." Language and Cognitive Science is a secondary discipline under the primary discipline of Chinese Language and Literature. The base not only recruits master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students majoring in "Language and Cognitive Science" but also recruits master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students majoring in "Linguistics and Applied Linguistics."
The Language and Cognitive Science Discipline Innovative Talent Introduction Base possesses comprehensive hardware and software facilities for experimental research. The "Language and Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory" of the base includes eye-tracking labs, speech labs, electroencephalography (EEG)/event-related potential (ERP) labs, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) labs. It has technical personnel proficient in brain imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and fNIRS. The base aims to build an international and open language cognitive science laboratory, providing a solid research foundation for serving the national science and technology development strategy and Chinese language promotion strategy.
Recently, the "Key Laboratory of Language and Cognitive Science (Beijing Language University)" led by the Language and Cognitive Science Discipline Innovative Talent Introduction Base has been approved for construction. This key laboratory will provide new and powerful guarantees for innovative graduate talent cultivation models and the improvement of graduate student training quality.
II. Introduction to the Major
Language and Cognitive Science is the first cognitive science secondary discipline established by Beijing Language University in China. It combines language acquisition, language cognition, and brain science to explore the behavior and neural mechanisms of language acquisition and cognition among Chinese language learners using new technologies and methods in cognitive science research.
Language and Cognitive Science is an important research field that emerged from the intersection of six supporting disciplines of cognitive science: linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, philosophy, and anthropology. Its scientific goal is to explore the mechanisms and laws of language generation, acquisition, and cognitive development in humans.
The base's Language and Cognitive Science major consists of three research directions: second language acquisition and cognition research, language cognitive neuroscience research, and language cognition and neuromorphic research.
As an interdisciplinary field, Language and Cognitive Science offers broader prospects for graduates in terms of further education and employment compared to traditional disciplines. Graduates can pursue scientific research and further studies in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, and other related fields at domestic and international universities and research institutions. They can also engage in teaching and research work at Chinese language international education institutions in universities, as well as work in education consulting, eye-tracking, electroencephalography, near-infrared spectroscopy, and other high-end professional technical training in language education and artificial intelligence-related enterprises and organizations.
III. Target Applicants
Based on the characteristics of the cutting-edge interdisciplinary field of "Language and Cognitive Science," this summer camp primarily targets outstanding undergraduate students (including students from our university) with backgrounds in Chinese Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, Psychology, Computer Science (including Artificial Intelligence Science and Automation), and other related majors.
IV. Summer Camp Schedule
This event will be conducted online. If participants wish to attend offline activities on campus, please indicate so in the registration form. The schedule for the summer camp is as follows:
V. Application Requirements
