In order to help new graduate students adapt to and plan their academic life more scientifically, the graduate student union atCCSLplanned a series of "academic experience sharing salons." The event was held in two sessions on October 31 and November 7, 2022. The event invited three full-time researchers fromCCSL: Associate Researcher Lu Lingxi, Dr. Jiang Yihan, and Dr. He Tao, to share valuable experience with the students. The salon was hosted by the chairperson of the graduate student union atCCSL, Wang Wei Yi, and was attended by more than 130 graduate students in total across both sessions.
Ms. Jiang Yihan shared her insights on how to understand a field, write a thesis, and enjoy research. Regarding how to quickly understand a professional field, she suggested starting with representative articles to grasp relevant research in the field, or starting with a review to understand a professional field more comprehensively, theoretically, and structurally. Additionally, Ms. Jiang emphasized the importance of course and experiment learning. She stressed that to succeed in research, one must be focused and dedicated to a problem, and regularly communicate and learn from their advisor.
Dr. He Tao shared his insights on how to do research effectively. He proposed five steps for conducting research: having ideas, conducting experiments, analyzing data, writing articles, and submitting them for publication. He advised students to build a solid foundation in their field during their graduate studies and to manage their time effectively and efficiently for learning. Dr. He Tao also answered questions and addressed concerns raised by the attending students. He believed that the most important factor in pursuing a Ph.D. is resilience, the ability to overcome difficulties, cope with pressure, and have the courage to overcome challenges. This is the key to achieving success in the field of research.
Ms. Lu Lingxi started with literature search and reading, briefly introducing the techniques for collecting and managing literature, and gradually delving into the entire research process. When discussing how to delve into a new research field, Ms. Lu suggested starting by reading a review article published within the last five years in that field, to grasp the basic concepts and development trends, and then using "research content" and "research team" as clues to gain a deeper understanding. Ms. Lu also answered many questions raised by the students, and emphasized that research is a long, continuous process that requires good research attitudes and habits, in order to form a positive feedback loop.
This academic experience sharing salon not only provided valuable learning and research experience for new graduate students atCCSL, but also offered many valuable suggestions for current students on how to make the right choices.
