On August 20, 2021,China’s Ministry of Education announced the list of degree-granting institutions that have completed the filing of their own sub-discipline and interdisciplinary subjects (by June 30, 2021). "Language Cognitive Science" declared by Center for the Cognitive Science of Language of Beijing Language and Culture University have successfully passed the record and become the first sub-discipline of "Language Cognitive Science" in China.
The sub-discipline of "Language Cognitive Science" at Beijing Language and Culture University will be included in the 2022 enrollment catalog and recruit doctoral and master students. It consists of three main research directions: language acquisition, language cognition, and language cognitive neuroscience. CCSL will serve as the enrollment and training institution。
Language Cognitive Science is one of the six important sub-disciplines (Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Psychology, Linguistic And cognition, cognitive anthropology, artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience). Among them, "Language and Cognition" is the so-called "Language Cognitive Science". Language is the core of cognition, and the branches of cognitive science are closely related to the study of language cognition. Therefore, linguistic cognitive science is the core subject of the above six sub-disciplines.
As a cross-discipline, the scientific research of Language Cognitive Science involves many related subjects such as linguistics, psychology, computer science, cognitive neuroscience and so on. The multidisciplinary characteristics of cognitive science determine the interdisciplinary characteristics of language cognitive science. Linguistic cognitive science is a new cross-discipline that integrates arts and sciences and has interdisciplinary characteristics.
Since its inception in the 1970s, cognitive science has attracted great attention from the academic community. In the new century, cognitive science has become a leading discipline among the four leading disciplines that have brought fundamental changes to human survival and development. As a sub-discipline of cognitive science, language cognitive science plays a key and important role in uncovering the mysteries of human mind (language and brain) and artificial intelligence (brain-like research).
CCSL not only undertakes the task of introducing intelligence, but also undertakes the task of subject innovation. The establishment of the “Language Cognitive Science” sub-discipline will further promote the intersection and integration of different research fields of linguistic research and cognitive science related disciplines. It will also promote the research of brains and brain-like brains in the field of artificial intelligence, which will contribute to the development of national science and technology and to major strategic needs such as the China’s Brain Project.
